Research project:

Clinical, epidemiological and economic burden of treatment in vulnerable older patients with prostate cancer.

“Prostate cancer is the most frequent cancer in older men. Older patients are a heterogenous population regarding underlying health status. Schematically, older people can be categorized into three groups: fit, vulnerable and frail, the two latter being at risk of adverse events and early death. Vulnerability and heterogeneity in older patients lead to suboptimal treatment in older patients with cancer. Guidelines recommend personalizing treatment decisions based on patient’s vulnerability status and not only on chronological age. Nevertheless, implementation of these guidelines in real-world practice has not been evaluated. Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is the cornerstone of treatment of prostate cancer. However, ADT has several side effects including osteoporosis, femoral neck fracture and dementia. Quantifying exposure to the effects of ADT over time will offer a better understanding of the impact of ADT harmful events. In addition, these events have significant economic implications for society and healthcare systems”.
