The concept of vulnerability is not universally agreed upon and encompasses many different aspects. Vulnerability can refer to physical and mental health, environmental risks, or social and economic fragility. The complexity of the phenomenon relates diverse facets to the notion of being “vulnerable” highlighting its multidimensional scope.
Climate change, armed conflicts, demographic shifts towards aging, global chronic diseases, and migrations describe the intertwined landscape where vulnerability emerges. Our life trajectories are impacted in several ways by these phenomenon, with significant repercussions on the most vulnerable populations.
In urban areas, for example, individuals are not equal when it comes to the risks of environmental exposure. To understand and tackle the vulnerability of certain population groups, it is critical to produce a comprehensive and cross-disciplinary analysis of the conditions that create such vulnerability. It is also crucial to prepare future stakeholders to address these issues through interdisciplinary dialogues.
Interest in vulnerability is growing across society. Researchers, governments, humanitarian actors, and civil society all recognize the importance of studying its various facets.
The EUR LIVE Graduate School, awarded project of the ANR, is committed to contributing to the understanding vulnerability. In partnership with INSERM and CNRS, the EUR LIVE offers research-based training aimed at overcoming fragmented approaches to vulnerability. Through dedicated seminars, EUR LIVE has engaged with renowned researchers to understand the multidimensional nature of vulnerability across three pillars: environment, biology, and public health/health economics.
In this framework, we are pleased to invite you to attend the Workshop on Vulnerability 'Cross-cutting perspectives in Environmental Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences. Dialogues and contributions for Transdisciplinary Research'. The event will be held on June 10th, 2024, at the National Museum of the History of Immigration (Paris).
During the workshop, vulnerability experts and students will engage in a multidisciplinary debate on identifying and evaluating vulnerability in contemporary society. The contributions will focus on aspects such as:
The contribution of students will be particularly important during this workshop. Their experiences studying of vulnerability will provide valuable perspectives to address vulnerability (urban stress factors, resilience of health systems, intersectionality perspectives in vulnerability studies, etc.).
Exploring vulnerability will lead to new discussions in research, teaching, public policy, and fieldwork. The insights provide all through this workshop will be further discussed during the Winter School ‘Critical Skills: Navigating Vulnerability to Foster Innovation and Equity’ . This event is scheduled to take place at UPEC in February 2025.
